BRITONS ARE BESIEGED

of both scxcs, a mob of 10,000 Chinese yesterday marched on the British Consulate in Shanghai, shouting to the British to get out of China.

They were met by armoured cars and police carrying light machine-guns and rifles, and were dispersed after three hours with- out causing any damage.

When the demonstration began,. all British women and children inside the Consulate were evacu- ated by a rear entrance.

The mcn stayed behind, among them being the com- mander of H.M. Sloop Alacrity, who had lorries ready to whisk all the staff away in case of violence.
